Road running summer outfit 2025

As the summer miles heat up, so does the need for breathable, supportive and lightweight running gear. Whether you're training for a half marathon, chasing a new PB on your local trail, or simply heading out for a joyful solo run, your outfit can make or break the experience. Also, the more colourful my outfit is, the more I feel motivated to go out for a run. I’m actually a bit particular when it comes to my running outfits. If a perfectly fitting shoe isn’t available in a colour that I like, I wont’ buy it.

After many test runs, sweat tests and long hot miles, here's my favourite road running outfit of summer 2025 – my go-to combination that keeps me cool, supported, and ready to flow.

Shoes: HOKA Clifton 9 Wide

When it comes to comfort over the miles on tarmac, the HOKA Clifton 9 Wide remains unbeaten for me this summer. With its ultra-cushioned midsole and roomy fit, this shoe supports both recovery runs and tempo sessions with ease. I even wear them in the gym when I go for a strength session straight after my run.

Why I love it: Featherlight feel, reliable grip, and the wide fit gives my toes space to breathe on those hotter days.

Socks: Hilly Toe Socks

Blisters? Not this summer. The Hilly toe socks have been a game-changer, especially for sweaty miles and longer efforts. Usually I wear my beloved Injinji socks. They only come in thicker material though which isn’t really helpful on a very hot summer run. Hence, I found the Hilly toe socks which are just as beautifully designed and comfortable. They also come in a thinner material.

Why I love them: They keep each toe separated and dry, reducing friction and preventing hotspots even on hilly terrain or longer sessions. Their colours are simply amazing and fun.

Underwear: Seamless Panties

This might be TMI for some, but let's be real – the wrong underwear can ruin a great run. I've found seamless panties (no specific brand loyalty here) to be the most comfortable, breathable, and least annoying choice. When I’m on my period run in period panties which works just fine for me.

Why I love them: No chafing, no visible lines, just pure comfort under shorts.

Shorts: Salomon Sense Aero 2-in-1

I really like the Salomon Sense Aero 2-in-1 shorts. The snug inner liner feels like a second skin, while the lightweight outer keeps everything looking and feeling airy.

Why I love them: I love the light material, the colour, and overall fit. They also have a storage for gels or a key - even though I never use it because I always wear a race belt or vest.

What could be improved: I haven’t found just yet running shorts that stay where they are - if you know what I mean. I always experience that the shorts move up on the run. I wish these would have some kind of glue on the inner side that will keep them on the thigh. My trisuit and cycle bib-shorts have this feature and I love it.

Top: Kiprun (Decathlon)

The no-sleeve Kiprun top is my absolute summer MVP. Minimal, breathable, and designed for performance, it’s become my favourite top for any kind of exercise really. And the best part: It’s cheap and very much affordable. Just because it doesn’t cost a fortune doesn’t mean the quality is less. In this case, it’s a real winner.

Why I love it: Ultra-lightweight fabric and zero distractions. Also love the colours.

Bra: Kiprun (Decathlon)

Supportive without being restrictive, the Kiprun running bra from Decathlon has been a surprisingly brilliant find. Again, affordable, functional, and great even for high-impact sessions.

Why I love it: Moisture-wicking, secure, and doesn’t dig into the shoulders – everything I need from a summer running bra.

Final thoughts: My Summer 2025 Running Kit Philosophy

In summer, I prioritise breathability, comfort, and functionality and you guessed it: colours and design. Every item above has earned its place through long runs, speed sessions, and sweaty summer mornings.

If you're building your own warm-weather road running kit, I hope this helps you discover new favourites or tweak your current setup. And if you’ve got a secret weapon in your own summer wardrobe – I’d love to hear about it.
