My favourite trail running outfit of summer 2025

Trail running in summer is all about adaptability. Whether I’m navigating rugged coast paths, forest trails, or switchback climbs, I need kit that breathes, moves and protects – without weighing me down.

After countless sunrise starts, stormy summits and sun-drenched descents, here’s my go-to trail running outfit for summer 2025, including my favourite layering options and terrain-specific shoe choices. If you’re looking to upgrade your summer trail gear, this post is for you.

Shoes: Terrain-Dependent Trail Favourites

Trail surfaces vary wildly and so does my shoe choice - except for one thing: A wide toe box. That’s a non-negotiable for me. Here’s what’s on rotation this summer depending on the terrain:

Technical Trails: Altra Lone Peak 9

  • Zero-drop, wide toe box, and solid grip – the Lone Peak 9 is built for gnarly climbs and loose descents.

  • Why I love them: Ground feel without compromising cushioning, and the foot-shaped fit gives my toes room to splay naturally. As soon as I tried on this shoe, I got the “Hell YES” feeling which means: These babies are mine :) Fun fact: Just about 3 weeks I bought them, they released them in a new and my favourite colour of this year: Purple.

Gentler Trails: Altra Experience Wild (Women’s V2)

  • A newer addition to my lineup, the Experience Wild feels fast and free while still offering decent traction.

  • Why I love them: Lightweight, smooth on flatter trails, and ideal for long runs when I want to stay agile. They come in a lovely purple and also the upper material dries quite quickly.

Road-to-Trail Hybrids: Nike Pegasus Trail 5 & HOKA Mafate Speed 4 (Wide)

  • These are my go-to when I start on tarmac or hit mixed terrain.

  • Why I love them: The Pegasus Trail 5 is snappy and responsive, while the HOKA Mafate Speed 4 (Wide) offers extra grip and stability if I’m carrying a pack or venturing further out. Besides their functionality, I really REALLY love their look & feel. Both are one of the prettiest shoes I’ve ever had.

Socks: Hilly Toe Socks

Toes that move independently stay happier – especially on uneven ground. That’s why Hilly toe socks are a summer trail essential for me.

  • Why I love them: Prevent blisters, wick sweat, thin material, and feel amazing even when wet.

Underwear: Seamless Panties

Simple but vital. My choice stays the same on trail as road: Seamless panties that don’t chafe or dig in, no matter how far or sweaty the miles get.

  • Why I love them: Forget-they’re-there comfort.

Shorts: Salomon Sense Aero 2-in-1

Even on rougher trails, I want the same support and zero-fuss freedom. These 2-in-1 Salomon shorts are my summer staple across both road and trail.

  • Why I love them: Inner liner feels comfortable even though it moves up on the run, outer shell moves effortlessly, plus handy storage for gels or keys (in case you like to use this pocket).

Top: Kiprun and Salomon Sense Aero Graphic No Sleeve

Same as on road – the Kiprun sleeveless top is my absolute go to! The Salomon sleeveless Aero top breathes and performs beautifully on the trails too.

  • Why I love it: Minimalist, moisture-wicking, and trail pack-friendly. Both come in beautiful colours. Kiprun offers their shirt at an unbeatable price though.

Bra: Kiprun (Decathlon)

Affordable, reliable, and holds up on long, bouncy descents – the Kiprun sports bra still makes the cut.

  • Why I love it: Doesn’t shift, even under a hydration vest or backpack.

Trail Extras: What I Always Pack

  • Buff: Doubles as a headband, neck cover, sweat mop, or emergency mitt. Indispensable.

  • Sunglasses: Lightweight, snug fit, and polarised for glare protection on open trails.(Tip: Look for trail-specific lenses or UV400 protection.)

  • Long-Sleeve Layer: ASICS: For early morning starts or windy ridgelines, my ASICS long sleeve comes out of the pack. Light warmth without bulk.

  • Waterproof Jacket: Inov8 Stormshell FZ V2 Women’s: Trustworthy even in heavy downpours. Taped seams, breathable, and packable. Proper protection that doesn’t overheat or restrict. And the colour is simply stunning.

Final Thoughts: Trail Kit that carries me

For me, trail running is where freedom meets function – and this outfit is the perfect expression of that. Whether I’m climbing through cloud, gliding over gravel, or soaking up sun on coastal tracks, these pieces keep me moving with ease, focus, and joy. And as always: I make sure to get them in different colours to give me some boost and energy already before I hit the trail. I just love preparing my outfit for the next day and see it laid our ready in the mornings.
